Share the news

AIIMS Bhubaneswar successfully operated on a rare scalp tumor, only the second such procedure in India, on Tuesday.
This collaborative effort involved a dedicated team of doctors who provided a new lease of life to a 51-year-old man from West Bengal named Rabindra Bishui. The tumor, a 7kg Synovial Sarcoma, was a challenge due to its rarity and location.

Led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Giri, the multidisciplinary team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, consisting of experts from various fields including Interventional Radiology, Surgical Oncology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Pathology, meticulously planned and executed the surgery. The procedure involved precise embolization of blood vessels followed by surgical excision, requiring intricate maneuvers such as ligation of arteries and neck dissection.

Despite the complexities and significant blood loss during the operation, the patient’s safety was ensured by the anesthesia team led by Dr. Aparajita Panda and the vigilant nursing team. After a successful surgery lasting about 7 hours, the patient received intensive care before transitioning to the ward for further recovery.

This achievement not only highlights the expertise and dedication of the medical professionals at AIIMS Bhubaneswar but also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex medical conditions.
