What You Need To Know About The Ukraine Russia Crisis

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine, giving rise to the tensions that might turn into a full blown war. Almost 137 Ukrainian people have lost their lives to Russia’s attacks.

But why has Russia Attacked Ukraine?

  • The tensions started in January 2021 when after the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked US President Joe Biden to include Ukraine in NATO.
    • NATO is the North Atlantic Alliance that is supposed to provide military and political support to it’s members. It is an intergovernmental alliance between 30 countries.
  • According to President Putin, Ukraine being a member of NATO will hamper the security of Russia. He also demanded that US gives in writing that NATO will not support in any military activity in eastern Europe and Ukraine.

When Did It All Begin?

  • This is not the first time that Russia has attacked Ukraine. Separatists backed by President Putin attacked Ukraine in 2014 and seized large portions of Eastern Ukraine.
  • Russia has been sending troops near Ukraine since last year for supposed ‘training exercises.’
  • On the 24th of February, Russia announced a military operation in Ukraine. The first day saw Russian troops destroying the airbases and airport in Ukraine.

How Is The World Reacting To It?

  • The European Union joins the US and several other countries in implementing sanctions against Russia.
  • India has requested President Putin to stop violence on innocent Ukrainians and instead find a solution with discussions and dialogues.
  • US President Joe Biden said the Russian President has “chosen a premeditated war” that “will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering,” vowing to respond with allies in a “united and decisive way.”
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned Russia and said, “NATO will do all it takes to protect and defend all Allies.”
  • French President Emmanuel Macron who also tried mediating a conversation between Putin and Biden, said France will “respond with no weakness” to Russia’s “act of war” in Ukraine.
  • UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson added
