As temperatures soar across North and Central India, bringing with them reports of heatwave-related fatalities, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) offers a ray of hope with promising monsoon predictions. According to IMD, this year’s southwest monsoon, anticipated to begin in Kerala within the next five days, is likely to exceed the long-period average (LPA) by 106%, with a model error margin of ± 4 percent.

The IMD’s announcement brings relief amid the scorching heat, forecasting above-normal rainfall for the central and southern regions of India. However, the North-East is expected to experience less rainfall than usual, with a similar outlook for North-West India.

Last year, India received 94 percent of the anticipated monsoon rainfall, highlighting the significance of this seasonal weather phenomenon which typically spans from June to September. The onset of monsoon in Kerala traditionally marks the transition from the dry season to the wet season across the country, crucial for agriculture and water resources.

While the monsoon’s arrival is eagerly awaited, IMD has also cautioned that temperatures in June are likely to remain higher than usual, particularly in northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region. The agency has warned of an increased number of heatwave days during June 2023, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures.

The IMD’s predictions serve as a beacon of hope for farmers and residents alike, signaling a potential respite from the blistering heat and a positive outlook for the country’s water resources and agriculture sector in the coming months.
