The south-west monsoon arrived in Odisha on Saturday, spreading through the southern states earlier than usual this year. According to the meteorological office, the monsoon has reached some parts of Malkangiri district. The current northern limit of the monsoon extends through Harnai, Baramati, Nizamabad, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vizianagaram, and Islampur. In the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall was reported in isolated areas of Malkangiri, Jajpur, and Nayagarh districts.

Typically, the monsoon reaches Odisha around June 12. In recent years, its arrival dates have varied, reaching on June 22 in 2022, June 16 in 2021, June 10 in 2020, June 11 in 2019, and June 21 in 2018. Odisha, being in the core monsoon zone, generally receives around 1,150 mm of rainfall from June to September.

Despite the monsoon’s onset, the meteorological office has warned that heatwave conditions and sweltering weather will persist for the next few days. Parts of the state will experience heatwave conditions, while coastal districts can expect hot and humid weather. On Saturday, Sambalpur and Boudh recorded the highest temperatures at 40.5 degrees Celsius.
