Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will depart Dhaka for Delhi at 11 am today to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, scheduled for Sunday in the national capital. The event will see the presence of several foreign dignitaries, including the leaders of neighboring countries. Modi is expected to meet these foreign leaders the following day.

Leaders from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, and Seychelles have been invited as part of India’s Neighbourhood First policy. Confirmed attendees include Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, with the latter two arriving in Delhi on June 9.

Additionally, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is anticipated to arrive on Saturday, accompanied by senior government officials. If Muizzu attends, it could mark a significant move towards easing the strained relations between India and the Maldives, which deteriorated after Muizzu’s election in November 2023, following his demand for India to withdraw its military personnel from the Maldives.
