In India, July 1, is recognized as National Doctor’s Day in honor of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy’s dedication to medicine and society. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (July 1, 1882 – July 1, 1962) was a renowned doctor, teacher, freedom fighter, social worker, and politician. He served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years, from 1948 to 1962. His birthday is celebrated as National Doctor’s Day in India. On February 4, 1961, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Dr. Roy dedicated his life to helping people, treated countless patients, and inspired many. He was also Mahatma Gandhi’s physician.

In India, National Doctor’s Day is observed to honor and celebrate the vital contributions that Doctors play in society. It helps in educating the general public on the significance of the duties and responsibilities that doctors play in providing patients with medical care. National Doctor’s Day is a special day observed in many countries worldwide to recognize and appreciate the contribution of physicians and doctors to society. This day is celebrated on various dates in various countries. In the United States, the day commemorates the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long on March 30, 1842. 

Doctors are the backbone of our healthcare system, providing patients with essential support and medical care when they are ill or in need. Their knowledge and commitment guarantee that people get the care and direction needed to live better lives. Besides their medical expertise, doctors also offer compassion and support, which has a significant impact on people’s social and psychological health. Their position is essential to the well-being of society as therapists and health advocates.

A doctor’s life is not simple. Doctors often work in lengthy shifts and must make difficult decisions. Dealing with sick and even dying patients may be quite distressing for them. Fourth during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors put in extra effort to treat the sickest patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors have been vital frontline workers, risking their health to care for patients and control the virus. They have tirelessly diagnosed, treated, and managed cases in hospitals, clinics, and testing centers. Despite numerous challenges, doctors have demonstrated remarkable dedication, resilience, and compassion, providing critical care and support to patients and their families. Their expertise and commitment have been essential in the global fight against COVID-19.

On this unique day, all Indians should be thankful for the efforts and contributions of the knowledgeable medical professionals who devote their lives to enhancing the health of their nation and feel proud of them for having saved lives during healthcare emergencies. National Doctor’s Day is a time to say thank you to the doctors who take care of us. They work hard to keep us healthy and deserve our appreciation. Let us remember to celebrate and support them, not just on National Doctor’s Day, but every day.
