News about a new variant of the coronavirus posing great threat to humans was circulating in the social media platforms since few days now, but is it entirely true? No. The World Health Organization in a statement clarified that whether the NeoCov reportedly found in bats poses serious threat to humans requires further research and study. The reports are based on Chinese research paper that are yet to be peer-reviewed.
The study which is yet to be peer-reviewed also said that the NeoCov is just one mutation away from posing a threat to humans. The virus is closely related to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome that was found in Saudi Arabia in 2012.
A doctor on his Twitter also called out the hype.
Neo Cov demystified
— Dr. Shashank Joshi (@AskDrShashank) January 28, 2022
1 NeoCov is an old virus closely related to MERS Cov which enter cells via DPP4 receptors
2. What's new : Neo cov can use ace2 receptors of bats but they can't use human ace2 receptor unless a new mutation occurs
Everything else is hype 🙏
