The Meteorological Centre has announced the formation of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal coast, with predictions indicating it will likely develop into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal tomorrow. It will then move north eastwards and may develop into a depression within 24 hours. The sea will remain rough on the 23rd and 24th, and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. Rain is expected in southern Odisha and interior Odisha on the 24th.
According to the latest IMD report, this system is expected to move northeastwards, concentrating into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal on May 24. It is anticipated to continue its northeastward trajectory, intensifying further thereafter.
The IMD forecasts squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, over the south Bay of Bengal on May 22. Wind speeds are expected to increase, reaching 60-70 kmph over central and adjacent southern parts of the Bay of Bengal on May 23 and 24.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated on May 25 in certain areas due to the low-pressure system. In response to this alert, the Odisha government has instructed district collectors to be prepared for any potential emergencies. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
From the 25th to the morning of the 26th, coastal Odisha will experience light to moderate rainfall. Balasore is expected to receive 7 to 11 cm of rainfall, and a yellow warning has been issued.
Currently, Odisha is also experiencing severe heatwave conditions. However, norwester rains, associated with Kalabaisakhi, are expected to bring rainfall and thunderstorms to coastal and northern Odisha.
