In a break from tradition, BJP MP Om Birla and Congress lawmaker K Suresh have both filed nominations for the Speaker’s election after the Opposition stood firm on their demand for the Deputy Speaker’s post. Following the Lok Sabha election results, the Congress insisted on the Deputy Speaker role as a condition for supporting the NDA’s candidate. However, the BJP, determined not to yield to what it termed as “pressure” politics, decided to contest the election.
