The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecasted that the southwest monsoon is anticipated to reach Odisha within the next 3-4 days, ahead of its usual date of June 12. According to Manorama Mohanty, director of the regional IMD center, conditions are highly favorable for the onset of the monsoon, suggesting an earlier arrival than expected.Despite some sporadic rainfall, hot and humid conditions continue to prevail across most parts of the state. The office of the special relief commissioner reported that the total number of suspected heatstroke deaths has risen to 151, with two new fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours. Confirmed heatstroke deaths have reached 36 this summer, according to official sources.The IMD bulletin indicated that conditions are conducive for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, parts of south Maharashtra, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and more regions of the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal over the next 3-4 days.A yellow warning has been issued for light to moderate rainfall in several districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Balangir, Malkangiri, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Bargarh in the next 24 hours. Alongside, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in multiple districts.Mohanty also noted that several parts of south Odisha are experiencing rain accompanied by thunderstorms, with an increase expected in the coming days. However, there is a likelihood of heatwave conditions returning by June 8.
