Climate scientist Roxy Mathew Koll from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology noted on X that, “a low-pressure system is projected to form in the south Bay of Bengal between May 22 and 23.” He highlighted that, oceanic and atmospheric conditions are favourable in this region, with sea surface temperatures being 2–3°C warmer than usual and the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) arriving there, which could facilitate the development of #CycloneRemal moving towards the east coast.
A low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, with an expected initial movement towards the northeast, potentially consolidating into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24, according to officials monitoring the situation. There is a possibility that this depression could intensify into the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season.
