IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra Lauded For Accurate Prediction of Cyclone

New Delhi : The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) lauded Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mruntunjay Mohapatra for accurately predicting the super cyclonic storm Amphan which immensely helped in early response and preventive action. In a letter dated June 2, it added that the services provided by IMD and RCMC Tropical Cyclone Centre acts as a lesson for best practices in tropical cyclone forecasting and warning services.

WMO expressed gratitude to India’s Cyclone Man on providing advisory bulletin every three hours to all members of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on tropical cyclones, particularly, Bangladesh, to provide accurate and consistent forecasting information from genesis from the formation till the negation of cyclone Amphan.

Speaking of the practices, the letter said that accurate prediction of genesis, track, intensity, landfall point and time as well as associated adverse weather like storm surge, rainfall and wind, by IMD/RMSC, with a lead of more than three days, immensely helped in early response and actions.

The services initiated by Mohapatra and his team will serve as a lesson in tropical cyclone forecasting and warning services and response actions leading to sufficient preparedness for mitigation of losses and damages. The timely sharing of bulletins helped in taking necessary and timely action by WMO Coordination hubs spread world-wide.
