Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approached the Supreme Court, requesting a seven-day extension of his interim bail on medical grounds. Kejriwal, who was released from Tihar Jail on May 10 after 50 days of incarceration, was initially granted bail by the Supreme Court until June 1 in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) revealed that Kejriwal’s health has significantly deteriorated during his time in jail. He has reportedly lost 7 kilograms and his ketone levels are elevated, which may indicate a serious health condition. Consequently, doctors have advised Kejriwal to undergo a Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan along with other medical tests. This medical advice forms the basis of Kejriwal’s petition for an extension of his interim bail.
After his release, Kejriwal has actively participated in campaigning for the INDIA bloc in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. However, the conditions of his bail restrict him from attending his office as Chief Minister or interacting with any witnesses or accessing official files related to the case.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement on March 21, shortly after the announcement of the general elections schedule, in relation to the excise policy case. His bail, which is set to expire on June 1, requires him to surrender to authorities by June 2.
The Supreme Court’s decision on Kejriwal’s petition will be closely watched, as it not only impacts his immediate health concerns but also his political activities during a crucial election period. The AAP continues to support their leader, emphasizing the urgent need for medical attention and a fair judicial process.
