Cyclone Remal, a severe cyclonic storm, made its landfall with wind speeds reaching 135 kmph, causing significant damage in West Bengal. The landfall, which commenced at 8:30 pm on Sunday, impacted coastal regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh, particularly near the southwest of Mongla.
As reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Remal began moving northward after making landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on Sunday night. By Monday, May 27, the storm had started to weaken as it continued its northward trajectory. The IMD further stated that the system is expected to shift to a north-northeast direction and gradually lose strength, downgrading to a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 27, 2024.
The cyclone’s impact has been severe, uprooting trees and disrupting normal life in the affected regions. Heavy rainfall accompanied the storm, adding to the challenges faced by the residents. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have initiated relief efforts to address the aftermath of the storm.
In anticipation of the cyclone, precautionary measures were taken by the local governments of both West Bengal and Bangladesh. Evacuations were carried out in vulnerable areas, and emergency services were put on high alert to respond to any crisis situations arising from the cyclone’s impact.
While the storm is weakening, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. Continued heavy rain may lead to further disruptions, and it is essential to remain cautious until the weather conditions stabilize.
