A Gujarat Special court sentenced to death 38 convicts involved in the 2008 blasts in Ahmedabad. The remaining 11 convicts were sentenced to life term imprisonment. The blasts killed almost 56 people and left 200 severely injured.
All the 49 were convicted under Section 16 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which deals with terrorism, as well as IPC sections 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

Around 20 bombs went off in different areas of Ahmedabad within a span of 70 minutes on July 26, 2008. The Islamic terror group, Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, had claimed responsibility for the attacks.
